My posts during April form part of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. My theme this year is Jazz and I've selected a variety of classics from across the board. I've mixed up the performers a bit though ...
"They hate him, they really do. But they don't understand him like I do. They don't see the man I do." My new client had just blurted out these words at the start of our session. Carolyn was a small, petite, blonde in her mid-40s. During our initial phone call, she'd told me she needed help with 'family issues'. And so the scene was set.
We had more sessions, during which I probed gently and Carolyn offered up evidence for those opening words. Turned out Carolyn was a bit of a Cinders. A weak father, a narcissistic mother and a golden child brother ensured that Carolyn was always on the bottom of the attention list. Her first husband had been a combination of the three but, following her divorce, she'd struck lucky.
Jim was quiet and kind. It hadn't taken him long to work out the family dynamic. And he had no trouble at all in putting his caring and thoughtful girlfriend first. When her family tried to dump on her in front of him, he would rebuff their attempts. When they tried to make her feel guilty, he would call them out on their behaviour. No wonder they didn't like him. And no wonder Carolyn did. Over time she came to realise that it was OK to choose Jim over her family. She left our last session smiling, having announced her upcoming marriage to Jim. She'd made me laugh out loud when she shared their choice for first dance : My Baby just cares for Me".

Gus Khan's classic takes second place in this clip. I'm afraid to say that this one is really not about the music and all about the dancing. And I just love it. It makes me smile, it makes me want to get up and dance ... even though I haven't a hope in hell of producing anything approaching that good.
Filmed at the Swingin' Genova Weekend - Winter Edition in February 2016 - it makes me formulate plans to visit Italy in February 2018!
