Every year, someone-or-the-other, produces a list of the best books of the past year. My TBR list has gotten so out of control that I barely dare glance at them, in case I end up causing the list to stop teetering and go straight into full-blown collapse mode.
Nevertheless, even in a year where I have signed up to a second Goodreads Challenge, one intended to help me work through those reads already on my bookshelf and/or kindle rather than purchase even more, I forecast that there'll be particular authors who I'll be unable to resist. Please join me in telling me yours so I don't feel quite so bad ...
Like so many others, I'm still wondering when the third part of Hilary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell tale "The Mirror and the Light" is going to appear? Every time her publisher releases something else, I find myself getting grumpy - and I suspect I'm not alone in that. In a similar vein, as someone who loved "A Suitable Boy" so much that a copy remains in my bookcase for a re-read, I almost squeaked aloud when I read that Vikram Seth's publishers had "A Suitable Girl" in the pipeline for this year, only to discover that's now changed to June 2018. I guess that gives me a little more time to fit in a re-read of the first! So many of my virtual book club at Mumsnet have loved the Shardlake tales (a rare agreement of opinion) from C J Sansom. Now that the reign of King Henry VIII is over, there's plenty hoping he'll continue the Shardlake tales under Queen Elizabeth I. No doubt there'll be more offerings from Jodi Taylor's St Marys and Ben Aaronovitch may get another PC Grant out, although may they may not appear this year either ...
So what about what's already out there: "Underground Railroad" feels like a must-read. "The Handmaid's Tale" is well overdue and needs to be read before the film version comes out; likewise "The Martian" before the bloke ignores my 'read before watching the film' rule. There's the rest of that masive, teetering TBR pile, including more from the pen of the wonderfully witty Isa-Lee Wolf.
What's on your radar for 2017? What can you tempt me to add to mine?
